Clare Burnett

Meine Praxis besteht darin, freundliche Skulpturen aus gefundenen und massenproduzierten Objekten zu schaffen. Die Ideen hinter der Arbeit berühren Umwelt, Welthandel, Überwachung und Kolonialismus. Ich verwende eine Vielzahl von Materialien und Techniken und wähle für jedes Projekt die passenden Farben und Oberflächen aus.

In den letzten Jahren habe ich mit Glasfliesen/Mosaik gearbeitet, um robuste, farbenfrohe Außenskulpturen zu schaffen, die heißem, kaltem und nassem Wetter standhalten. Die Arbeiten, die ich im Freien und an öffentlichen Orten mache, reagieren auf den Raum. Mein Ziel ist es, eine ruhige Resonanz mit der Geschichte oder den physischen Merkmalen des Raums aufzubauen – eine Schwingung, die den Betrachter dazu befähigt, seine eigenen Geschichten zu erschaffen.

Beispiele für Projekte sind ortsspezifische Arbeiten im Leighton House Museum, die Sir Frederick Leightons Leidenschaft für das Bewegen von Stoffen in seinen ansonsten statischen Gemälden offenbarten; bronzene Handstücke als Antwort auf Migrationsfragen; Beton- und Mosaikskulpturen in Zypern, inspiriert von Artefakten, die im 19. Jahrhundert auf Zypern geplündert wurden und aus Gegenständen hergestellt wurden, die auf den Straßen von Nikosia gefunden wurden; Große gekachelte Skulpturen vor der Royal Society of Sculptors in London, die auf die Kameras von Telefonen, Sicherheitskameras und Türklingeln rund um das Gelände verweisen. Ich stelle derzeit lackierte Objekte her, die mit militärischen Plünderungen in China im 19. Jahrhundert in Zusammenhang stehen und aus modernen chinesischen Importen hergestellt werden.

My practice is to create friendly sculptures from found and mass-produced objects. The ideas behind the work touch on the environment, global trade, surveillance and colonialism. I use a variety of materials and techniques and select the appropriate colours and finishes for each project.

For the past few years I have been working with glass tile/mosaic to create sturdy, colourful outdoor sculptures that can withstand hot, cold and wet weather. The works I make outdoors and in public places respond to space. My goal is to establish a calm resonance with the story or physical features of the space - a vibration that empowers the viewer to create their own stories.

Examples of projects include site-specific works at Leighton House Museum, which revealed Sir Frederick Leighton's passion for moving fabric in his otherwise static paintings; bronze handpieces as an answer to migration questions; concrete and mosaic sculptures in Cyprus, inspired by artefacts looted in Cyprus in the 19th century and made from items found on the streets of Nicosia; large tiled sculptures outside the Royal Society of Sculptors in London, referencing the cameras from telephones, security cameras and doorbells around the site. I am currently making lacquered objects related to military looting in China in the 19th century using modern Chinese imports.
